    Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary

How would you love to stroll deep into the jungle with the only company being the distant thunders of the sea and the noisy birds? Well, there is one place in Colombia where you can find this kind of isolation, and yet enjoy your exploration.

The Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary is tucked away on the Malpelo Island, which is about 506 kilometers from the Colombian Coast. The island is small – just 350 hectares – but it is surrounded by a whopping 857,150 hectares marine environment.

Apparently, this is the largest ‘no fishing’ zone in the Eastern Pacific Tropics and provide a critical habitat to the world’s endangered marine species. It also doubles up as an important source of nutrients to the great populations that make up its marine biodiversity.

Trust me; there is no other place in the world where you can sight the short-nosed, rugged-toothed deep water shark this near to the shore. The Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary is amazingly rich in shark populations with the giant grouper and billfish sharks being the most common.

The park has gained notoriety as one of the top diving destinations in the world.  Its only rivals to the top spot include the Great Barrier Reef of Australian and the Great Belizean Reef with its ‘Big Blue Hole’.  The fact that this is a cheaper destination makes it even more alluring since it is affordable to budget travellers.

The destination boasts steep walls and underwater caves that form important habitats to among others large predators and pelagic species. Over 200 hammerhead sharks and 1000 silky sharks, whale sharks and tuna have been recorded here.  If you are looking for a hyper-adrenaline, this is up there with the best of them.

Scuba divers, nature lovers, sun bathers, photographers and hikers will have a field day exploring the wonders of the Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary. The destination will give you a mix of unwinding and relaxation with some adrenaline packed adventures.  Enjoy your holiday.
